How follow-up questions work (and how many to ask)

Updated Oct 6, 2026

After a user reacts, Iterato can start a short AI-driven conversation to find out why. You decide which reactions trigger it and how long it runs.

Choose when follow-ups appear

  • followup_if_negative: true is the most valuable setting. It is where churn reasons hide

  • followup_if_neutral: true catches "it's okay, but…" users (smiley only)

  • followup_if_positive: true helps you learn what to double down on

Choose how many questions

question_count sets the total number of questions, from 2 to 7. The default is 3, and 3 or 4 is the sweet spot: enough to get the real reason, short enough that users finish.

Customise the wording

  • initial_prompt: the first question, for example "Was checkout easy?"

  • followup_prompt: the invitation to say more, for example "Mind telling us what got in the way?"

Example

IteratoService.collect("checkout-abandoned", {
  followup_if_negative: true,
  question_count: 4,
  initial_prompt: "Was anything stopping you from checking out?"
});
